30 fps vs 60 fps

At 30 fps each frame stays up for 33.3 ms, twice as long as at 60 fps, so motion moves in jumps twice as big. Press Play to see both rates on your own screen.

Pick 60 fps if

  • you play fast games, where a 30 fps frame can hold back a button press for 33.3 ms
  • your game has a performance mode: in Mark Cerny’s figures, PS5 players chose it about three times in four
  • you film fast motion, since each 30 fps jump grows with the speed of the camera or the subject

Pick 30 fps if

  • you want the detail of a console’s fidelity mode, which usually runs at 30
  • you upload 1080p video and want smaller files: YouTube recommends 8 Mbps at 30 fps, against 12 at 60
  • the scene is slow or still, where the two rates look the same

Motion

30 and 60 fps side by side

Moving at 960 pixels a second, the 60 fps shape jumps 16 px each frame and the 30 fps shape 32 px. Most screens run at 60, 120 or 240 Hz, which both rates divide evenly, so you see them at real speed. A 144 Hz screen shows neither rate evenly, since 144 is 2.4 times 60, so both stutter slightly there and are labeled uneven.

Frame time

The step from 30 to 60 fps saves 16.7 ms on every frame, more than the next two steps together: 60 to 144 Hz saves 9.7 ms and 144 to 240 saves 2.8 ms. On a screen that holds each frame still until the next, an object your eyes follow smears across the distance it moved in that frame, which is called persistence blur. So at 30 fps a pan is both jumpy and soft, and a button press can take a whole 33.3 ms frame to show. Your eye has no frame rate of its own to compare these numbers with.

Uses

Games

Many console games let you choose between a fidelity mode and a performance mode. In a 2024 PS5 Pro presentation, Mark Cerny, the PS5’s lead architect, said fidelity modes add resolution and detail but usually run at 30 fps, with choppier visuals and less responsive controls. Performance modes cut detail to reach 60. Players picked performance about three quarters of the time. On a PS5 you can set that choice once for every game that offers it, under Game Presets, as PlayStation’s support guide shows.

In Qin and Zhu’s 2024 preprint, not peer reviewed, players’ scores and accuracy dropped only at 30 Hz, with no difference from 60 Hz up to 240 Hz. Frame generation doesn’t fix the delay: Tom’s Hardware found that a game smoothed this way still responds at the pace of its rendered frames, not its generated ones. The FPS test shows the frame rate your own computer gets.

Video

YouTube lists 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 and 60 fps as common upload rates and recommends 8 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps against 12 Mbps at 60 fps. An iPhone records at 24, 25, 30, 60 or 120 fps, depending on the model. Apple notes that faster frame rates make larger files and can be played back slowed down. The faster the camera or the subject moves, the bigger each 30 fps jump.

Questions

Why can't I see the difference between 30 and 60 FPS in my games?

Most often the game isn't running at 60. A fidelity mode, a frame cap or a graphics card that can't keep up holds it near 30, and the game's frame counter or an overlay shows which. Speed matters too: a slow pan moves a few pixels per frame at either rate, while a fast turn jumps far enough at 30 fps to see.

Can the human eye tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps?

Yes, as soon as something moves across the screen. A still image, a menu or a slow scene looks the same at both rates, because nothing has moved far between two frames.

Is 30fps too slow?

For fast games it often is: each frame stays up 33.3 ms, and a button press can take that long to show. Console fidelity modes run at 30 on purpose, to spend the time on detail. For video it's a standard rate.

What's better, 1080p 60fps or 4k 30fps?

For motion, 1080p at 60 fps, which shows twice as many frames. For detail, 4K at 30 fps, which has four times the pixels in every frame. 4K also costs more data: YouTube recommends 35 to 45 Mbps for a 4K upload at 30 fps, about three times the rate for 1080p at 60 fps.

Is 30 FPS bad for eyes?

No. The frame rate adds no flicker: a 60 Hz monitor keeps each 30 fps frame up for two refreshes. Tired eyes at a screen have other causes, among them glare and blinking only 5 to 7 times a minute instead of about 15. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says screen use does no lasting harm.
